Project Summary This is an application for an NIA Academic Leadership Career Award from Anne Cappola, MD, ScM, Professor of Medicine and Executive Director of the PMCRI at the University of Pennsylvania. The goal of this proposal is to develop research and educational infrastructure, mentorship, and career development activities in support of research and clinician education focused on medical comprehension by older patients, including patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD) and their caregivers. This will be achieved through implementation of two specific aims. The first aim will foster research on medical comprehension by older adults that spans the spectrum of cognitive function, with five prespecified areas of focus, and in collaboration with scientists at Penn’s Annenberg School and content experts in each area of focus. The second aim will develop educational curricula on medical comprehension by older adults, including those with AD/ADRD and their caregivers, designed for clinicians across career stages. The mentoring goals of this application will support internal medicine residents in a structured elective and postdoctoral fellows in the Master of Science in Translational Research program and Geriatric Medicine fellowship. The career development goal is to support the candidate’s professional development and program building across AD/ADRD, methods research, and medical education. The institutional environment for interdisciplinary research is outstanding at Penn, and the proposal integrates multiple programs that interface with the five prespecified focus areas, with strong departmental support, including protected time and dedicated space. The long-term objective is to build self-sustaining research and education programs that continue after the award period ends.
