PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT CORE (CORE B): REVISED PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT The mission of the Center on Healthy Aging Behaviors and Longitudinal InvestigationS (CHABLIS) Program Development Core (Core B) is to support pilot projects that will facilitate innovation in longitudinal research on healthy aging behaviors (HABs) and cultivate the next generation of NIH-funded research leaders in the demography and economics of aging. The primary goals of Core B are: 1) to solicit a wide range of proposals from emerging scholars and other researchers that promote innovative, population-based social science research in the longitudinal study of healthy aging behaviors (HABs); 2) to review and select proposals with guidance from the Center’s Executive Committee (EC), Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), and External Advisory Committee (EAC) in accordance with the goals of the Center; and 3) to provide mentorship and monitoring that supports pilot projects in achieving their aims and obtaining external funding. These goals will be achieved through three programs: 1) a new Emerging Scholars Pilot Program, which will build on past successes of Core B to solicit, recruit, and select pilot awardees who are early career investigators located either at research active institutions (RAI) or at Institutional Development Award (IDeA) state institutions; 2) a new Emerging Scholars Mentorship Program, which will provide dedicated mentorship to emerging scholars to support their successful application to NIA K or R funding mechanisms; and 3) an Innovation Pilots Program, which will support projects that aim to develop new or enhance existing data collection or measurement methods in longitudinal aging studies. Across both Emerging Scholar and Innovation Pilots, we will continue to recruit applicants using three primary strategies: 1) identifying candidates within UC, 2) leveraging our partnerships at external institutions such as Chicago State University (RAI) and University of Vermont (IDeA), and 3) soliciting applications from all U.S. academic institutions through public facing calls for proposals The proposed Core B will be led by faculty with deep expertise in longitudinal measurement of healthy aging and decades of mentorship experience. Collectively, the proposed Core B is well-positioned to bring innovative and rigorous scientific methods and outcomes as well as the development of trainees who will have lasting impact as independent investigators.
